Springfield Hellcat Micro-Compact Pistol Review
Springfield Armory’s Hellcat is a high-capacity micro-compact pistol marketed and designed for concealed carry. It has a full grip with a high beavertail that works with the undercut trigger guard to control recoil and mitigate muzzle flip, making it one of the easiest-shooting 9mm micro-compacts on the market. The pistol comes with a standard rail to add lights, lasers, and other accessories and has front and rear cocking serrations and a loaded chamber indicator witness hole.
The Hellcat is available in a Springfield hellcat variety of finish options, including black and desert FDE tan. It is available with either an 11- or 13-round magazine and also in a low-capacity version for jurisdictions with restricted magazine capacities. Both models come with a detachable flush-fit magazine floorplate and hex key.
Unlike the slim single-stack G43, the Hellcat features a double-stack magazine that can hold up to 15 rounds. This is a big capacity upgrade that won’t be lost on anyone who totes a slim single-stack daily and would welcome the extra round in the same size and form factor.
When it comes to a striker-fired pistol, the trigger is what makes or breaks it. The Hellcat’s trigger is not the best striker-fired trigger out of the box but with a little practice, dry-fire, and range time, its smooth and light pull gets even better. The trigger shoe has a flat profile and break point that’s in line with current trends, while the nickel boron-treated components help reduce friction and wear for consistent operation.
A reversible slide serration gives the shooter a choice of two positions to rack the slide with and front and back serrations provide secure handholds to manipulate the slide, even when wearing gloves. The Hellcat’s frame is milled for the Shield footprint, which allows it to co-witness with a wide variety of popular micro red dots.
Getting the proper sight picture with a compact pistol is important for consistent accuracy. The Hellcat’s high-visibility tritium front sight and luminescent U-Dot rear sights make it easy to quickly acquire a sight picture, even in low light.
The Hellcat’s slide is hammer forged for stellar accuracy and features a precision melonite coating. The hex bolt has dual captive recoil springs with a full-length guide rod to ensure reliable cycling in every shooting condition. It’s easy to mount optics on the pistol’s non-proprietary rail section forward of the trigger guard, and the reversible magazine release can be run right or left handed.
The Hellcat’s low-profile, flat top serrations help it blend in with most clothing for concealable carry. Its reversible takedown lever is easily accessible and can be rotated to convert into a thumb-rest for comfortable single-handed use. Springfield Armory has done a great job with this pistol by keeping the process of removing the slide and disassembling the gun simple, similar to their XD line. This makes maintenance and cleaning the Hellcat a breeze.
